What Makes Bluey Characters Extraordinary?

Bluey is a popular children's animated series and has been a family favourite ever since the show’s debut in 2018. The show has been capturing hearts around the world ever since. It is common to have at least one favourite episode from the show; however, as Bluey fans, it is difficult to pick just one from the many favourites we have!

As for my personal favourites, I'd have to say Magic Xylophone, Keepy Uppy, Goodnight Fruit Bat, The Show, and Sleepytime because of their fantastic messages and compelling stories. However, the ‘Grannies’ episode is the one that takes the cake! I am sure we can all agree on the fact that we are absolutely in love with “I slipped on ma beans!

I may not be the only one to absolutely adore the ‘Grannies’ episode from the lot. One of the many reasons for the show’s success is the well-developed and relatable characters in the show. Apart from being regular Heeler doggos on the show, their character development in every episode beautifully captures the essence of our everyday lives. Furthermore, the way the creators have portrayed all the characters in the show is truly remarkable!

The makers have given thought to each character on the show and have made them extraordinary in many ways, and here are some of the reasons why.

Firstly, Bluey and Bingo, a.k.a. Rita and Janet, are relatable characters that children can identify with. They are not perfect, and they make mistakes just like regular children. They play, they argue, and most importantly, like most siblings, they love each other and are protective of each other. What makes them special, especially in the Grannies episode, is how Bluey (even though she is just a child) realises that she may have unintentionally hurt Bingo by stating she was right about grannies not knowing how to floss! She is then quick to make amends and takes it upon herself to teach Nana and Bobba how to floss. A selfless act to make her little sister, Bingo happy.

Secondly, Chilli is an inspiration for mummies because of how SEEN her character makes them feel. For instance, in the episode ‘Sleepytime’, Chilli is supportive of Bingo, who wants to sleep in her ‘big girl bed’. Even though her enchanting dream and bedhopping give sleepless nights to both Bandit and Chilli, towards the end, Chilli reassures Bingo that no matter what, she'll always be there to love and support her. It is the most subtle yet powerful form of reassurance for any child.

Likewise, Chilli and Bandit are excellent role models for parents, not just kids. They are shown as loving and caring parents who are always there for their children. In the episode "Hairdressers," Chilli helps her daughter Bingo overcome her fear of getting a haircut by being patient and supportive. Similarly, in "Takeaway," Bandit makes sure that his children are tucked in on time, even though he is tired after a long day at work. These instances demonstrate that parents can be superheroes to their children by being there for them when they need it the most.

The female characters in the series are not portrayed as the traditional ‘homemakers’ and mere ‘nurturers’ that women are often associated with. Instead, they are shown as strong, independent role models who can take charge and make decisions. They lift each other up. Like Coco’s mum, Bella, in the ‘Baby Race’ episode, who tells an overwhelmed Chilli that she is doing great! They are showcased as real, considerate characters who support one another instead of tearing each other down.

In Bandit’s case, he is vulnerable, funny, caring, smart, and affectionate, as opposed to the dad characters in most children’s series. He, like most dads, looks out for his family even though he may be absolutely worn out with work and other commitments from being a busy archaeologist.

Bandit and Chilli beautifully show the love and romance shared between parents. Overall, they are all exceptional characters that children can relate to and learn from, and parents can aspire to become. They represent the real world, where parents make mistakes and learn from them, where women can have successful careers and balance their personal and professional lives. The characters are strong and independent. They break gender stereotypes and inspire children to be confident and assertive.

All of the characters in Bluey, be they main or supporting, are extraordinary! They all contribute to the show's success and make it a delightful experience for children and parents alike.
